Imperial hot springs, a love story, and the spot where China's history pivoted
Huaqing Hot Springs is one of China's most historically layered sites. The springs have been used by emperors since the Zhou dynasty (11th century BC). The Tang Emperor Xuanzong famously brought his beloved consort Yang Guifei here — China's greatest love story. In 1936, Chiang Kai-shek was captured here during the Xi'an Incident that changed China's history. The site also contains important Tang dynasty palace ruins.
